Police from multiple agencies joined forces to apprehend a gunman who killed eight people, including a sheriff's deupty, in Lincoln County Saturday night and Sunday morning.

"I ain't fit to live, not after what I done", Cory Godbolt told The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/2rbQIq5) after his arrest. Godbolt was hospitalized in good condition with a gunshot wound, though it wasn't clear who shot him.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said prosecutors plan to charge Godbolt with murder, but it's too soon to say what the motive was.

Mitchell said that he was able to escape with Godbolt's wife, but three other family members in his home, in addition to the sheriff's deputy, weren't able to get out and they were killed.

In the video and recounted in a story on the paper's website, Godbolt said he had gone to a residence to talk with his wife, her mother, and her stepfather about taking his children home.

Godbolt showed up at Mitchell's home in the southern MS town of Bogue Chitto shortly before midnight Saturday to demand that his estranged wife give up their two children. That's what they do. "That cost him his life, I'm sorry".

After the sheriff's deputy arrived at the house, Godbolt looked as if he was about to leave, then reached into his back pocket, pulled a gun and opened fire, Mitchell said. The shootings reportedly began as a domestic dispute between alleged shooter Godbolt and his estranged wife, over the custody of their children.

Authorities say the crime scene involves three separate homes in Lincoln County, and one of the victims is a sheriff's deputy.

Police say this was Godbolt's third and final stop.

Images of Godbolt's arrest were taken by a local newspaper the Clarion-Ledger, and he told them in an extraordinary interview he'd planned "suicide by cop".

The MBI said more bodies were found at two other crime scenes.

Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Sheriff's Deputy William Durr, 36, responded to a call of a resident wanting the suspect removed from the property in Bogue Chitto, Rushing said. He also noted the "sacrifice" made by law enforcement officers to protect and serve their communities.

In asking what's next for him, Godbolt told a reporter that "death" is next'.

Bogue Chitto is an unincoporated part of Lincoln County and Brookhaven is the Lincoln County seat, about 60 miles south of Jackson.

A Lincoln County Sheriff's vehicle and evidence tape block a street Sunday, May 28, 2017, in Brookhaven, Miss., where several people were fatally shot Saturday evening.

MS state Governor Phil Bryant issued a statement to residents asking for them to pray for the victims.
